When to see the DC cherry blossoms in 2027

Typical peak bloom dates, why no one can predict 2027 yet, how to book flexibly, festival dates, and the best spots and times to see the trees.

When peak bloom usually happens

The National Park Service defines peak bloom as the day 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open. The most likely window is the last week of March to the first week of April.

The extremes are wide. The earliest peak on record was March 15 (1990) and the latest was April 18 (1958). The trees at the Tidal Basin are the ones NPS tracks.

Why 2027 can't be predicted yet

NPS says peak bloom is almost impossible to forecast more than 10 days ahead. It depends on late-winter and early-spring weather, so no one can give you a reliable date this far out.

Expect an official NPS prediction only close to the season. Until then, plan for the whole typical window rather than a single day.

How to book around the uncertainty

Book flexible. Choose hotels and restaurants with free cancellation, and pick flights you can change if possible. Since the festival runs March 20 to April 11, a stay in the last days of March or first days of April gives you the best odds.

If you can, stay four or five nights rather than two. A longer stay lets you shift sightseeing around the weather and catch the trees at their fullest.

Check NPS Bloom Watch and the festival's Bloom Watch page as your dates approach. The festival's #BloomCam shows the Tidal Basin trees live.

  • Choose refundable hotel rates and change-friendly flights.
  • Book timed tickets and reservations with free cancellation.
  • Watch the NPS prediction once it is published, then adjust.

Festival dates and events

The 2027 festival, a Century of Celebration, runs March 20 to April 11. Most headline events are free; a few, including Sakura Matsuri and parade grandstand seats, need tickets.

Check the official festival site for details and any changes.

  • March 20: Opening Ceremony, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., DAR Constitution Hall.
  • March 27: Blossom Kite Festival, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (check the festival site for final times).
  • April 2: Night in Bloom, a new illuminated procession.
  • April 3: Petalpalooza at Navy Yard, 1 to 9 p.m.
  • April 10: Parade from 11 a.m. along Constitution Avenue NW, about 10 blocks.

Best places to see the trees

The Tidal Basin is the classic view, and it is best at sunrise, when the water is calm and paths are empty. Tour buses tend to arrive in the morning, so go early. NPS had said the Tidal Basin and West Potomac Park work area would stay closed through the 2026 festival, with reopening expected shortly after, so check NPS for current access before you go.

East Potomac Park is a quieter option, lined with Kwanzan and Yoshino trees. Walk toward Hains Point for open river views.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. MemorialSunrise over the Tidal Basin with calm water and few people.
  • Thomas Jefferson MemorialBlossoms frame the dome; check NPS for work zones first.
  • East Potomac ParkQuieter walk under Kwanzan and Yoshino trees.
  • Washington Monument GroundsKite Festival lawn on March 27; arrive by 10:00.
  • The Gardens at Dumbarton OaksTerraced gardens with cherry slopes, away from the Tidal Basin crowds.

Best times of day

Go early, between about 6:00 and 9:00 a.m., for the best light and fewer people. Take Metro rather than driving to the Tidal Basin.

In late March, sunrise is a little after 7:00. For a second look, the Lincoln Memorial steps at golden hour give a view down the Reflecting Pool; arrive about 30 minutes before sunset.

Our day-by-day plan puts sunrise at the Tidal Basin on the Saturday of the Kite Festival, then East Potomac Park in the afternoon.
