Northern lights tour in Tromsø: a first-timer's guide

When to go, how many nights to book, how a guided aurora chase works, what to wear, and how to fill the short winter days in Tromsø.

When the northern lights season runs

The lights may be visible from late August to early April, whenever the sky is dark and clear enough. Organized tours usually run from September to early April, so that is the practical window for a first trip.

Activity is often highest between about 20:00 and 02:00, but the lights can appear at any time during the night. Plan on late evenings.

How many nights to give it

Clear skies matter most, and the weather in Tromsø changes quickly. Visit Tromsø advises spending several nights, and that is the best protection against one cloudy evening.

Our template trip uses five days with two guided chases (nights one and three) and a self-guided evening on night four. That leaves a spare night if a tour is rescheduled for weather.

How a guided aurora chase works

You are picked up in the evening, often around 18:00 to 19:30, and ride in a minibus with a guide. The guides watch cloud cover and aurora activity through the night and drive toward clearer skies. In bad weather that can mean long drives, sometimes across the border into Finland, so bring your passport.

Expect roughly 5 to 8 hours out, often back before 01:30. Tours typically include hot drinks and snacks, and some operators also offer a hot meal, a bonfire, borrowed tripods, and help with camera or phone settings. Warm suits and boots are often available to borrow, depending on the operator. Prices vary by operator; one small-group minibus tour lists from 2,190 NOK.

The lights can't be guaranteed. Booking a small minibus early in your stay leaves room to reschedule if the night is cloudy. Check each operator's refund and rebooking terms.

What to wear

Tours lend thermal suits and boots, but you still need good layers underneath.

  • Thermal underwear, plus a warm hat and mittens
  • Wool socks, which help inside borrowed boots
  • Ice grippers (brodder) for town, since pavements are icy; pharmacies (Apotek) sell them
  • Spare camera batteries kept in an inner pocket
  • For your own photos: a tripod, ISO 1600–3200, 2–8 second exposures

What to do in the short days

The Polar Night runs from late November to late January. The sun stays below the horizon, but it doesn't get fully dark in the daytime. Days are for daylight-friendly activities and an early dinner before pickup.

Our plan mixes active mornings with easy afternoons. Book the busy ones early: reindeer sledding in February books up weeks ahead.

  • Tromsø Villmarkssenter TownDrive your own husky team through snowy valleys; thermal suits provided.
  • Tromsø Arctic ReindeerReindeer sledding and Sámi culture; book weeks ahead for February.
  • FjellheisenCable car with blue hour views; go up by 14:30.
  • Arctic Cathedral1965 church with a big stained-glass window, an easy first-day walk.
  • The Polar MuseumExpedition history indoors; winter hours are short, so check closing time.
  • Sauna Pust TromsøHarbor sauna with cold plunge; pre-book at pust.io.
