Where to stay in Luxor for the August 2, 2027 eclipse

East Bank or West Bank for the 2027 Luxor eclipse: how each handles August heat, distances to Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, and when to book.

The short answer

For most independent travelers, the East Bank is the better base for eclipse day. It has more hotels and restaurants, it is next to Luxor Temple and Karnak, and you can watch totality from your hotel without crossing the river.

The West Bank suits you if you want quiet, a pool and an apartment with its own kitchen, and you are happy to plan around the river crossing. Totality in Luxor lasts about 6 minutes 20 seconds on August 2, 2027, so the goal is a comfortable base with open sky and air conditioning, not a perfect spot.

East Bank: what it is like in August

The East Bank has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and transport, and a livelier atmosphere. Karnak and Luxor Temple are both on this side, and the airport journey is relatively direct.

The downsides are higher demand on eclipse day and crowds around the busiest hotels. The plan cites highs of 42-47°C in early August, so sightsee at opening time and spend midday indoors.

  • Winter Palace LuxorShaded gardens and open sky on the East Bank; a natural eclipse-day base.
  • KarnakEast Bank temple; go at opening, then be back indoors before the heat.
  • Luxor TempleWalkable from Corniche hotels; lovely lit up after sunset.

West Bank: what it is like in August

The West Bank is calmer and sits closer to the Valley of the Kings and the other tombs and temples. An apartment or villa with a pool, separate rooms and a kitchen makes the hot hours easier to manage, which matters in August.

The trade-off is the river. Bridge and West Bank traffic is expected to be severe on eclipse day, so anyone based here should settle on a viewing spot on the West Bank itself rather than plan to cross. Check that your lodging has strong air conditioning, food and a reliable ride, because a remote room without them is a poor bargain.

  • Valley of the KingsRight on the West Bank; arrive at opening for cooler tombs.
  • Madinat HabuQuiet West Bank temple, a good early-morning stop from a nearby base.

Distances and getting around

Stay on one bank on eclipse day. Our plan keeps August 2 entirely on the East Bank for exactly this reason: the bridge and West Bank roads will be jammed, and you do not want to be stuck in a car at 13:02, when totality begins.

The Valley of the Kings is a West Bank trip, best done on a different day. Go at opening, around 06:00, and be done before the heat builds. East Bank guests can make that crossing on August 1 or August 3 instead, when traffic should be normal. For the plan's eclipse-day timings, partial phases start around 11:40 and totality runs 13:02 to 13:08 local time.

Choosing a room for the heat

Whichever bank you pick, treat the hotel as a heat refuge. You will spend the middle of each day in it, and you will be there before and after totality.

Look for these before you book:

When to book and how long to stay

Book now. Several Luxor hotels and specialist tours are already advertising waitlists or sold-out dates, and one listing for a three-night eclipse stay in a 3-star hotel shows $2,625 as its starting price. Prices for what remains are far above normal, so a fast decision matters more than shopping around.

Plan for four to five nights, arriving July 30 or 31 and leaving no earlier than August 3. That protects eclipse day from flight delays and gives you cool early mornings for the temples. Read deposit and cancellation terms carefully, and keep in mind that a room reservation is not the same as a confirmed viewing place.

Before you go

Buy ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses well ahead and check them for damage. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking at the sun.

Our day-by-day plan keeps eclipse day on the East Bank and builds in air-conditioned breaks. If you are traveling with children, read Luxor in August with kids, and see our Karnak guide and Luxor overview for the rest of the trip.
