Where to go for New Year's Eve 2026: nine cities compared

Nine New Year's Eve trips for 2026, from Nashville and New Orleans to London, Edinburgh and Sydney: what's free, what needs a ticket and how to choose.

Free · about a minute

Choosing a city for New Year's Eve comes down to a few plain questions. Will you stand outside for hours? Will you pay for a ticket? How cold can you stand it? These nine trips answer those differently.

We checked each one against the organizer or the city's tourism office on November 4, 2026. Some 2026 details aren't out yet, and we say where that's the case. New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday this year.

The US: five free midnights

Nashville, for a big free concert

Jack Daniel's New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash is free and takes place at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. This year's headliners are Little Big Town, The Red Clay Strays and HARDY, and the night ends with the Music Note Drop at midnight and fireworks. CBS broadcasts it. Visit Music City's page doesn't list start times yet, so check it before you plan your evening.

Nashville is the easiest pick on this list if you want a large free show with Broadway's honky-tonks nearby. See our Nashville page.

New Orleans, for a mild night by the river

The free New Orleans Eve concert at Woldenberg Park has live music from local artists, and fireworks go off over the Mississippi at midnight. New Orleans & Company says the 2026 details are still to come. The city's listings also show family events on December 31, including Noon Year's Eve and Zoo Year's Eve, which helps if you're traveling with kids.

Mardi Gras is close behind, on February 9, 2027, if you'd rather come back for that. See our New Orleans page.

Las Vegas, for the Strip on foot

Last year's plan had fireworks launched from rooftops along the Strip, including Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, Resorts World and The Venetian, for eight minutes at midnight. The Strip began closing at 6pm and didn't reopen until nearly 2am, with free buses running through the night. The Las Vegas tourism board hasn't updated its page for this year, so treat those as the pattern and confirm closer to the date.

Fremont Street holds its own countdown, and that one's separate from the Strip show.

Chicago, for fireworks over the lake

Navy Pier's midnight fireworks run for more than 10 minutes over Lake Michigan, set to music. Choose Chicago says you can watch for free from any of the pier's pedestrian areas if you get there early. The other way to see it is a dinner cruise or a hotel party, which also keeps you out of the cold.

Our Christmas in Chicago plan is a market weekend earlier in the month, and it's a useful starting point for the city.

New York, for the one everyone knows

Times Square is free with no tickets for sale. Viewing areas opened at 3pm last year, you can't bring a large bag, and if you leave your spot you can't come back. The ball starts its 60-second drop at 11:59pm. The alternative is the free fireworks at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, listed for midnight with live music from 10pm.

Our guide to New Year's Eve in NYC without Times Square weighs up the options, and the New Year's Eve in New York plan lays out three days from December 30 to January 1. If you're coming earlier in the month, here are the NYC Christmas markets.

Abroad: four very different nights

London, if you book now

You can't see the Mayor's fireworks from the viewing areas without a ticket, and that includes anyone under 16. Tickets cost £40 or £55 depending on the area, plus a booking fee, with £20 off for London residents. Ticketmaster is the only authorised seller, with up to four tickets per person, and no refunds. Gates are open from 8pm to 10:30pm.

The first release is on sale now, and no date has been given for a second. The Greater London Authority strongly advises against bringing young children. Several Thames bridges close to pedestrians, so use the station listed for your area. Our three-day London plan can fill the rest of the trip.

Edinburgh, for four days of it

Edinburgh's Hogmanay is the most complete program on this list:

  • December 29: Torchlight Procession at 6:30pm.
  • December 30: Night Afore Party with The Fratellis in Princes Street Gardens, from 6pm.
  • December 31: Street Party from 8pm, tickets from £10, age 12 and over. The organizers put it at 45,000 people. Underworld play Hogmanay in the Gardens as a separate ticket, and the Midnight Moment fireworks go off over the castle.
  • January 1: First Footin', a free live music trail around the city's venues, with no tickets.

It's outdoors in Scotland in late December, so pack for rain and wind. And look at the ticket insurance offer before you pay.

Sydney, if you want summer

It's the warm option, and one of the first big shows of the new year. Fireworks launch from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and other landmarks at 9pm and again at midnight, and the 9pm show means children can see it and still get to bed. The City of Sydney lists 48 vantage points around the harbour, some free and some ticketed, and alcohol rules vary from one to the next. Some sites have sold out, so pick your spot first and book around it.

Reykjavík, for something that isn't an event at all

There's no official fireworks display. Visit Reykjavík says the residents make the show themselves: bonfires in the neighborhoods early in the evening, then the streets go quiet for the TV comedy special, then the whole city starts setting off fireworks at about 11:30pm. Bars and clubs carry on after midnight into the morning.

Book dinner well ahead, and check what's open on the day. To see more of the country, there's the Iceland in 7 days plan and our Iceland page.

How to choose

  • Free, with no planning: Nashville or New Orleans. You only need a room.
  • Warm: Sydney, by a long way. New Orleans is mild by US standards.
  • With children: Sydney's 9pm show, or New Orleans' daytime events. London advises against young children, and Edinburgh's Street Party is 12 and over.
  • Something to tell people about: Edinburgh's four days, or Reykjavík.
  • Deciding late: the free US events still work in December, as long as you can find a room. London tickets may be gone by then.

Whichever you choose, tell Sally the city and your dates in the box on this page, and you'll get a day-by-day plan around it, free. It takes about a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to spend New Year's Eve in the US?

Yes. Tickets cost £40 to £55 for 2026, and you can't enter the viewing areas without one. That includes children under 16. Ticketmaster is the only authorised seller.

What is Hogmanay?

It's the Scottish name for New Year's Eve. Edinburgh's Hogmanay runs over several days, with a torchlight procession on December 29, a Street Party and fireworks on December 31, and a free music trail on January 1.

What time are the Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks?
