Affordable local zichar fare in a casual eatery located about 10 min walk from Nicoll Highway station. Claypot chicken rice was indeed the star. Very generous with the portions though vegetables were sorely lacking. Staff were helpful enough to help mix the rice upon serving. Didn’t need to wait 30 mins as initially stated. Another dish I enjoyed was the Nyonya steamed fish. Very smooth, chunky, boneless slices of fish meat in a pungent sauce. Moonlight horfun was also good. Duck with lotus root didn’t impress and was quite bland. Also if you have a preference for which part of the duck you want, you gotta state it upfront upon ordering. Service staff will not ask. If you don’t state any preference, they will by default serve the wing and upper part of the duck to you instead of the leg area. Service standards vary. We encountered a pretty curt waitress who took our order and another waitress who was really good with customers. No water served in glasses FOC / for a small charge. I’ve passed by this restaurant a number of times and finally decided to give it a try. The food leaned on the salty side. The only dish I found somewhat enjoyable was the traditional handmade crab meat and prawn roll—but even then, $11.80++ for six pieces felt rather steep. Portions overall seemed small. The coffee pork ribs came with just six pieces for $16.80++, and every pieces is so small, just about the size of my two finger in width (picture attached) and the barramundi fish dish was mostly tofu skin with only a few pieces of actual fish. The signature ink sotong braised noodles were also underwhelming—$16.80 for noodles with four sotong balls and little else, lacking flavor and substance. We didn’t finish our meal as the dishes were too salty, and by the end, we still left unsatisfied. Conclusion: With these prices and portions, I believe I can find a far better meal elsewhere. I ordered three packets of claypot rice and two soups. Since one packet serves three people, the total food was meant for nine people. However, I was only given three small chili packets. When I asked for more, I was given just two additional packets, making it five in total. I explained that this was not enough for nine people, but the staff told me that was the maximum they could provide. The chili containers are very small, and clearly insufficient for the amount of food ordered. I am extremely disappointed with this level of service. I have been supporting this shop since it first opened in Geylang, and I still travel all the way from Bukit Timah to buy from your current and only branch. I spent $98.10 on this order, yet was only given three small chilies initially. If extra chili needed to be charged, the staff could have informed me, I would have been willing to pay. Instead, I was simply told there was a limit of two additional packets of chili. Please improve your service standards and the way your staff communicate with customers. A place that serves great tasting food with efficient service, just that the ambience isn't some place you would go for a hot date. 😅 That being said, it's a great place to bring your friends and family to eat, chit-chat and have a good time together. Damage for our order was about $45/pax (3 peeps) with pics for reference. Do note that you will need to give them time to prepare your claypot rice, so I would recommend that you either call in advance or just be prepared to wait a fair bit.Desmond Ang
